** MEDIA ADVISORY **
Cliffside Park, NJ, August 15, 2005 – The Rebeka
Verea Foundation will hold its first town meeting to address the issue of safe
and responsible driving for teens at 6:30pm on August 18, 2005 at Villa Amalfi
Restaurant, 793 Palisade Avenue in Cliffside Park. The tragic and untimely death
of 18 year-old Rebeka Verea was the result of a high-speed motor vehicle
accident on West Side Avenue in North Bergen, NJ on the evening of her high
school graduation, Monday, June 20, 2005. Rebeka was a passenger in a car on
this particular road that has a history of accidents and use as a speedway for
young adults.
Dr. and Mrs. Jorge L. Verea, President & Vice-President of the foundation, are
hosting this meeting to raise awareness on this critical issue through
leadership and political forum. NJ Attorney General Peter C. Harvey will be the
keynote speaker at this meeting, along with the NJ Department of Highway and
Traffic Safety Director Roberto Rodriguez. Also expected are Cliffside Mayor
Calabrese and County Freeholder Sal Vega. The Rebeka Verea Foundation Board of
Trustees, North Bergen Chief of Police Galvin, Cliffside Park Police Chief
Keane, mothers and fathers, concerned citizens, and other members of the
community will participate in a question and answer session to help identify and
access state and county resources that might be available locally to address
this matter.
With a very successful fundraiser behind them, the Verea family feels that this
is the next step necessary to bring together state, county, and local community
and civic leaders in order to enact change that will prevent this generation and
generations to come, from suffering the same fate as their beloved Rebeka.
